Background of the Study
Traditional proverbs in Igbo are more than mere expressions of wisdom; they are repositories of historical and cultural information that document semantic evolution. These proverbs encapsulate community values, social norms, and historical events, often conveying meanings that have shifted over time (Okafor, 2023). As language evolves, the meanings of words and phrases within these proverbs can change, reflecting new social realities while preserving links to the past (Chinwe, 2024). Oral transmission over generations has ensured that these proverbs remain a vital part of Igbo cultural heritage, serving both educational and mnemonic functions. Scholars argue that the analysis of proverbs can reveal how historical experiences, such as colonialism, migration, and technological change, have altered semantic fields (Nwosu, 2025). By comparing older and contemporary proverbs, researchers can trace semantic shifts and understand how cultural influences have redefined meanings. This study aims to appraise the role of traditional proverbs in documenting historical semantic shifts in Igbo, using a combination of oral history and textual analysis.

Statement of the Problem
Despite their cultural significance, traditional Igbo proverbs have not been systematically analyzed as tools for tracking semantic change. Existing studies often focus on literary or folkloric aspects, neglecting the potential of proverbs to document historical language evolution (Okafor, 2023). This oversight limits our understanding of how external influences and internal dynamics have reshaped meaning over time. Without a comprehensive analysis, the full depth of semantic change captured by these proverbs remains underdocumented, undermining efforts to preserve Igbo cultural heritage (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document and analyze Igbo proverbs across different historical periods.
  2. To identify semantic shifts within these proverbs over time.
  3. To evaluate the cultural factors that drive these semantic changes.

Research Questions

  1. What semantic changes can be identified in traditional Igbo proverbs?
  2. How do these changes reflect historical and cultural influences?
  3. In what ways can proverbs serve as reliable indicators of semantic evolution?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it leverages traditional proverbs to uncover historical semantic shifts, providing a unique lens into Igbo cultural and linguistic evolution. The findings will enrich our understanding of language change and support cultural preservation initiatives by highlighting the importance of oral tradition.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses exclusively on traditional Igbo proverbs and does not extend to other genres of oral literature.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Semantic Shifts: Changes in the meanings of words or phrases over time.
  2. Proverbs: Short, traditional sayings that encapsulate cultural wisdom.
  3. Igbo Language: A major language of southeastern Nigeria.
